Aft cabin - The Concorde Story
At Brooklands you have a unique entry point to start
your flight on board our Concorde, we take you inside Concorde
though her
cargo hold - a section of the aircraft built here at Brooklands.
As you enter, have a look up to the ceiling - we
have replaced part of this with perspex which allows you to see
how Concorde
was built. Also visible is one of the new joins we had to make
to the aircraft when we moved it to Brooklands in 2004.
A
special area at the back of aft cabin has been stripped back
to its structure so visitors can see how Concorde was build.
Once into the Aft cabin, rather than is being fitted
with 15 rows of passenger seats, we have developed an exclusive
exhibition
that
is split into 4 themes:
- The Origins
of Concorde – focusing on the development of
supersonic transport in the 1950s and 1960s. In a display case
you can see a “pork pie hat” a trademark worn by Sir
George Edwards – the father of Concorde in Britain.
- Building
and Testing – see the work that went into getting
Concorde off the drawing board and into passenger service, on display
we have Delta-Golf’s log book and a set of original checklists.
A cabinet displays a selection of models of airlines that had options
to purchase Concorde…but never did
- Concorde
in Service – charts the successful years Concorde
was in passenger service from 1976 onwards. See
one of the top secret intake control computers from Concorde
as well
as a selection
of Concorde memorabilia from Britain and France.
- Tragedy,
Recovery and Retirement – find out the real
story of the Paris accident and why Concorde was retired.
You also get
the chance to touch one of the special Kevlar
tank liners that were fitted into the Concorde fuel tanks
after the
disaster.
Each themed area has a special video programme showing
archive films clips.
After you have seen the exhibition all of the video
screens in the exhibition area come together and present a specially
produced
5 minute programme on the history of the Brooklands Concorde,
telling the story of here flight test and how she was moved
to Brooklands
and subsequently restored to her former glory.
